Patan Heating & Air: Built on a Legacy of Comfort and Sustainability
Patan Heating & Air isn’t just a company; it’s a family tradition passed down through generations
I’m Joel Patan, a third-generation sheet metal worker and the proud owner of Patan Heating & Air. Originally from Northern Alberta, I was practically born into the HVAC industry. The company name itself honors my father’s legacy, and our logo embodies the spirit animal bestowed upon my grandfather by the Inuit during his time working as an HVAC specialist in the Northwest Territories.
Building a Strong Foundation: My Journey in Sustainability
My career path began with sheet metal work. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, I ventured into gas fitting, becoming one of the first Red Seal gas fitters in Alberta.
My father’s guidance then led me to explore sustainable construction through the Certified Energy Advising program. Equipped with this knowledge, I went on to complete my Level 1 Building Inspector certification and registration with the BOABC.
However, my education didn’t stop there. Witnessing a gap in the integration of high-performance building practices and green technologies within the HVAC industry, I became passionate about bridging this divide.
My mission became clear: to educate homeowners, builders, and mechanical companies on how sustainable construction techniques can seamlessly work in tandem with a home’s HVAC system.
As one of the first mechanical contractors specializing in Step Code mechanical systems, I actively contributed to the advancement of sustainable building practices in Kelowna.
Experience and Expertise: Shaping the Future of Comfort
Before establishing Patan Heating & Air, I held leadership positions like Director of HVAC for Vision Mechanical Ltd. and Mechanical Designer/Project Manager at Lux Homes. These experiences allowed me to refine my skills from being a contractor to collaborating directly with a builder specializing in sustainable construction.
With the invaluable support of the Lux Homes owner, I finally embarked on my lifelong dream of revitalizing Patan Heating & Air.
Sharing Knowledge and Building Together
My dedication to education extends beyond my work. I’ve been featured as an instructor for the CHBA-CO on mechanical design for new construction projects.
Furthermore, I’ve had the privilege of speaking on the international podcast Net-Zero 2 Hero, discussing mechanical design and retrofitting heat pumps in existing homes.
I’m also a proud participant in FortisBC’s rebate program for Step Code new construction mechanical design and have contributed to high-profile projects like the net-zero/passive house documented by HGTV, the Eh-Frame.
